The basics:

Horizon is an Ashes of Creation guild. We are a tight-knit, adult community of players and testers. Our goal is to create a club-like atmosphere, forging bonds and friendships to last a lifetime. As such, we are currently on the smaller side for a guild. Our size, however, is not a detriment, but a strength. It allows us to pay individual attention to each of our members ("Cohorts") without allowing anyone to get lost in the cacophony larger guilds often come with.We believe that MMORPGs do not need to be a second job. Our interest is not necessarily in being competitive, but rather, remaining whole and consistent, allowing all of our Cohorts to log in as much or as little as they please, and have a good time. Our membership is diverse, and will always embrace the enrichment that comes from having a member-base which walks many different paths of life. Our guild is a safe and welcoming place for all. (Yes, this means we are LGBTQ+ friendly.)Additionally, we are an immersive roleplay ("RP") community. That means that much of what we do, in addition to the basic content Ashes of Creation allows us to interact with, lies in collaborative storytelling. It is not a requirement, though we strongly recommend partaking, as RP in any MMORPG can be a truly enjoyable way to interact with the game, and with each other. If you are new to RP, we are here to help, which RP workshops, guides, and resources readily available on our Discord server.

Community Rules:

RESPECT
Respect is paramount to Horizon. We have a Zero Tolerance Policy for discriminatory comments, hate speech, mean-spirited "humor", or anything that would dehumanize or alienate people for their immutable characteristics.COMMUNICATION
Communication is key. It is the first line of defense against escalating conflicts. People are imperfect, and disagreements may arise. We expect members to communicate honestly and maturely with one another, and to avoid making hasty assumptions.ON DISCOURSE
Handling discourse should involve a "Steward" or "Delegate" if direct communication has failed. To that end, these volunteers will always try to approach any discourse with an open mind. If you are unsatisfied with the resolution of discourse, we will work together to find a solution. We are not in the business of giving up on improvement when something is bothering any of our Cohorts.ANTI-HARASSMENT
Harassment is absolutely not tolerated. This extends to interactions outside of the guild and the game. Ashes is a PvP game, and our Cohorts may form rivalries with other players, but those should never cross the line into griefing and harassment. Justified PvP is not harassment, as long as boundaries and lines are respected. We will never have a KoS list. If we are harassed, we will defend ourselves, but will not resort to counter-harassment.

PRIVACY
Privacy is a quality of life item that we want to preserve on this server. We ask that our Cohorts please always be discerning with what they choose to share about themselves. Do not share anyone else's private information if entrusted with it.ON NSFW CONTENT
NSFW content is strongly discouraged. Though we are an 18+ guild, many of our members may not be somewhere private while chatting. As such, we ask that pornographic, extremely violent/bloody, or intentionally repulsive imagery never be shared to our Discord.SAFETY
Safety is important to Horizon. For the safety of minors, we do not accept members under the age of 18. Additionally, we strongly encourage any Cohort, and any person who has had dealings with our guild, to immediately bring any safety concerns to any trusted Steward or Delegate in Horizon.ON POLITICS & RELIGION
We believe that real world politics and religion can be divisive topics. While we will not police harmless opinion, we do not recommend trying to navigate these topics in a larger, more diverse group, as opinions are likely to vary. (Regarding harmful opinions, please see our first rule on RESPECT.) It is best not to discuss these things outside of DMs or private off-server voice chats, for harmony's sake.IF THIS SOUNDS GOOD TO YOU

How To Join:

As we are a relatively new guild, we don't yet have this process neatly automated. It is fairly painless to apply now, but this process will likely be updated in the very near future. For now, please follow the steps below to join Horizon:

Join Our Discord
Select the green "Interested in Joining!" button on our #how-to-join channel.
Complete our application form and await acceptance. (Typically takes no longer than 24 hours to review.)
Cohort role and will have access to our Members Only channels.

Horizon Discord

This is our home base of operations. Access to Discord, at present, is required. You do not have to join voice channels. We do recommend using the Discord channels to forge bonds with your fellow Cohorts, of course. This is also where most of our RP is happening at present. (After launch, it is likely most RP will transition to in-game, though some long-form RP might still live on Discord!)

ARC (Ashes Roleplay Community) Discord

The Ashes Roleplay Community is a community hub for all AoC roleplayers, headed up by a coalition of RP guild leaders. This is the second iteration of the community, aiming to do essentially what Horizon is doing as well: To persevere, remain drama-and-toxicity-free, and bring storytellers together.

Like us, Intrepid keeps the bulk of their real-time-updates on Discord. It is their primary method of communication with the Ashes of Creation community. It can be a little bit on the toxic side, but is good for up-to-date information on the development and progress of the game. We try to post guild ads there every week!

Horizon operates on the notion that leadership is a service, rather than an entitlement. To that end, we have set up a system of leadership that is intended not to be hierarchical, but instead to indicate the levels of effort we are willing to commit to. Below, you can find our detailed descriptions of our three member types: Stewards, Delegates, and Cohorts.

Stewards are volunteer leaders. Stewards need to approach "leadership" collaboratively, and consider all things in the interest of the guild and its members. This position does entail some work, and is not merely for passing down decrees. Stewards handle everything from day-to-day moderation, conflict resolution, recruitment, creation and coordination of guild-wide events, and communication. We'll work together to better refine what is expected of all Stewards.There will likely be hiccups, establishing our community and finding a good rhythm working together. Many of us might not have collaborated in the past, despite coming from the same guild. Stewards need to be mature, accommodating, and driven. We can make some decisions outright, but many things will likely be fully collaborative at the start.We presently don't have specialized roles that would focus specifically on certain types of content, but that may become necessary down the line. All guild restructuring will be done as a team. Delegates can be brought into the process as well, where it seems fitting. Because we are so new, and this structure is still being built, clearer boundaries and will be established.This position is currently being assigned to those who have determined themselves able and willing to take on the added responsibilities of guild leadership. Going forward, we might begin to encourage more to apply to the position, and will review future appointments as a council.
Current Stewards: Nythrim, Tamas

Delegates are similarly volunteers, and have some basic moderation capabilities. Delegates are willing to assist with cohesion, minimizing or getting out in front of needless drama, and provide some guidance to other Cohorts. At present, this position has also been build completely of people who feel willing and able to accept the responsibilities of moderation. The bulk of the work, however, should still be on the shoulders of Stewards, as Delegates will be less in the weeds.Delegates will also be the ones to occupy any potential gap between Stewards and non-ranking Cohorts. If a Cohort has grievances with Stewardship, but doesn't want to approach them or fears they will not be heard if they do, then Delegates are encouraged to advocate for them. Hopefully this part of the job never becomes necessary, but provisions for this exist just in case.In the future, Delegates will be appointed only by non-Steward, non-Delegate Cohorts. A nomination can be brought up at any time, and a public poll will be posted leading to the appointment. Relevant channels will be established when we've reached that point of stability and are ready to put that into motion.
Current Delegates: Breeze, Foitz, Caeleth

All members, including Delegates and Stewards, are considered Cohorts. This essentially means that you are a member of Horizon. Delegates and Stewards are encouraged to remembers that they too are Cohorts, and all others should feel empowered to contribute to the guild as they see fit, and indulge in what we have to offer.Cohorts, representing the whole of the guild, will all be tasked with upholding a positive reputation. Everything we do in the public sphere with our guild name floating above our heads or preceding our Discord names in other channels, reflects on all of us.

This is a commitment to all Cohorts of Horizon:Many of us have, at one time or another, been a part of a community that one day unexpectedly closed its doors. Some of us have been through this on multiple occasions. Horizon was built in response to one such event, gathering up a scattered community as best we could, and creating a new home for all.I've personally been among the guild membership of two different guilds who resigned to displace their members because their leadership teams lost interest in Ashes. Some might argue that this is the nature of a community centered around a game still far from its release; That when a guild's leadership no longer has the will to pursue a game, it is only natural that said guild be terminated.Personally, I do not find this to be very considerate to one's guild. So, I want to make a promise to all:If ever the day comes that any Stewards or Delegates decide they aren't interested in Ashes anymore, they will gracefully step back from their position, as these positions were created to serve the Cohorts of the guild in their endeavors in Ashes of Creation. This expectation applies to ALL Stewards and Delegates, including myself, as one of your Stewards, the founder of our Discord, and the individual who has the responsibility of its "ownership" role, per Discord's functional limitations.If I ever decide that Ashes is not for me, I will work with all Cohorts--especially those who have accepted the added responsibility of Steward or Delegate--to properly transfer the server to a willing party who is still playing. I would much rather do this, than erase or destroy everything we have built together. Any future "server owner(s)," I feel, should do the same.This guild will survive until it no longer has any active membership, or all remaining active members unanimously agree to dissolve or completely rebrand.In short: I want this community to endure. We want this community to endure. Even if interest in Ashes fluctuates, we will never blindside any of you with a sudden closure. We will instead adapt our volunteer team as needed.

For Alpha 2, Phase 2, on Shol, we presently have negotiated a formal Non-Aggression Pact (NAP) with the Gray Sentinels. We are nearing negotiations with The Revas Order and Dünhold as well, but as of yet have not formally established anything.As a general rule of thumb, Horizon is not an aggressive guild, and will not be attacking players or guilds at random. Many of us recognize all other RP and RP-adjacent guilds as friends, even without having established any formal relations.If you wish to negotiate an alliance or pact with Horizon, simply join our discord and speak with any Steward or Delegate. Our negotiation specialist is Foitz, though any can work with you!
